Aluminium Sliding Doors in Dubai: Systems, Glass and Common Faults

Guides Published 9 February 2026 Updated 14 July 2026 8 min read

How aluminium sliding door systems perform in Dubai conditions — profile choice, glazing, the faults that appear after a few summers, and when to repair rather than replace.

Why sliding doors fail here first

Sliding doors take more abuse than any other opening in a Dubai home. Sand gets into the track, the sun works on the gaskets, and the door itself is heavy enough that any wear in the rollers immediately shows up as a door that drags.

Almost every “my sliding door is broken” callout we attend is one of four things: worn rollers, a damaged track, failed gaskets, or a lock mechanism that has dropped out of alignment because of the first three.

Profile systems

The profile is the aluminium extrusion that carries the glass. Three things matter:

  • Wall thickness. Thin-walled profiles flex under the weight of large glazed panels, and flex is what eventually kills the seal line.
  • Thermal break. A non-conductive barrier inside the profile stops heat conducting straight through the frame. In Dubai this is not a luxury item on a west-facing elevation.
  • Track design. Deeper tracks with proper drainage clear sand and water instead of holding it against the rollers.

Glazing choices

Single glazing is cheapest and is fine for internal or shaded openings. Double glazing with a low-emissivity coating is the meaningful upgrade for anything taking direct sun — it cuts solar heat gain, which shows up directly in cooling load.

Where a sliding door is also a barrier — a balcony, a pool edge — the glass specification changes and laminated becomes the correct call.

Repair or replace?

SymptomUsual causeRepair or replace
Door drags or juddersWorn rollersRepair — roller replacement
Draught and dust ingressFailed gasketsRepair — reseal
Door will not lockAlignment or mechanismRepair — adjust or swap mechanism
Track visibly deformedImpact or long-term wearUsually replace the system
Frame corroded at the baseStanding water, poor drainageReplace

The honest rule: if the frame and track are sound, almost everything else is a repair. We would rather sell you a roller set than a door you did not need.

Keeping them working

Vacuum the track — do not just brush sand deeper into it — and lubricate once or twice a year. That single habit is the difference between replacing rollers and replacing a door system.

FAQ

How long do aluminium sliding doors last in Dubai?

A well-specified system with a decent profile and maintained tracks will run well past fifteen years. A thin-walled system in an unmaintained track can be dragging within three.

Can you replace just the glass in a sliding door?

Usually yes, if the frame and track are sound. Cracked or blown double-glazed units are routinely swapped without replacing the door.

Is double glazing worth it in Dubai?

On any elevation taking direct sun, yes — the reduction in solar heat gain shows up in cooling load. On shaded or internal openings the payback is much weaker.
